GOP is trying to get a budget passed without Democratic support

Republicans in the Senate and the House are pushing different versions of budget resolutions, each in the hopes of settling on one that will allow them to create a budget bill that they can pass through reconciliation. But they can settle on a resolution first. If they do that, they will be able to craft a budget bill that will require only a majority vote in the Senate. If they can’t pass a budget resolution both chambers agree on, they will have to get a budget passed by two-thirds of the Senate to avoid a Democratic fillibuster. Right now, the House and Senate resolutions are very different. The House wants a single bill that sets ranges for spending cuts required from each committee and specifies a maximum for tax cuts. The Senate, on the other hand, wants two bills, one to fund defense and the border wall, and another one to take care of everything else. The Senate is hoping to get the first bill taken care of right away and then work on the second one. It remains to be seen if the GOP can get their act together and work out the differences between the House and the Senate. If they can’t, they may be looking at a government shutdown as early as March 14. If the GOP successfully gets a budget passed without Democratic support they will be able to fund Trump’s entire agenda for Tax cuts and spending. See the story in The Hill.
